SACRAMENTO – Senator Sasha Renée Pérez (D-Pasadena) issued the following statement on Governor Newsom’s veto of SB 877 and SB 878; legislation to help fire survivors by holding the insurance industry accountable to serve policyholders:
“I’m deeply disappointed to see Governor Newsom veto SB 877 and SB 878, two bills that would have held the insurance industry accountable for illegally delaying fire survivors’ recovery.
“SB 877 would have required insurance companies to show policyholders in greater detail how their claims payments were calculated. This measure received unanimous bipartisan support because it was the right policy for fire survivors who had been experiencing reduced claims payments without receiving clear answers about why their payments had been reduced. SB 878 would have ensured that policyholders received their claims payments in a timely manner by imposing financial penalties when insurance companies needlessly delay and deny payments required by law. Again, this measure had strong bipartisan support. These two bills were written after hearing directly from Eaton and Palisades Fire survivors, who are still struggling to rebuild after the January 2025 Eaton Fire.
“I’m disappointed that, again, California Fire survivors will be forced to wait for accountability and justice as a result of the Governor’s veto. I will continue working with fire survivors to aid in their recovery and author legislation to address the needs of disaster survivors throughout California.”
